European Union (EU) member states have forfeited their political freedoms to a bunch of unelected officials in Brussels, an analyst tells Press TV.
“Free trade is a great idea. I always support the idea of free trade among European countries – a wonderful idea. But giving up your political freedom to a central government that is virtually unelected? Are you kidding? They need to wake up,” said Paul Sheldon Foote, Professor at the California State University.
The concept of the EU is a disaster, with a poll conducted last year revealing that every member state except “Germany and Spain had the majority of people still thinking the EU was a good idea,” said Foote.
The scholar went on to say that a few unelected officials in Brussels are controlling the freedoms of Europeans who are struggling under a mountain of financial issues.
“The real answer is getting out of the Eurozone and taking control of their political destiny one more time,” Foote said.
This comes as the European Central Bank lowered its growth forecast for the eurozone in 2013, with the European Commission announcing that the eurozone would witness another year of recession this year.
Europe plunged into financial crisis in early 2008. Insolvency now threatens heavily debt-ridden countries such as Greece, Portugal, and Spain.
The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, which have triggered incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
